5 of the Best Running Events in the West Midlands

I’ve always enjoyed a run around, from my Middle School days when I used to drag my poor mother out to the school field at 6am to train for cross-country to more recently, using it as one of the most effective ways to relieve stress or anxiety. Having said that, I don’t run as often as I should… despite knowing how much I love it. For me, having an upcoming running race is the best kind of motivation, and nothing beats the feeling of race day.

Whether you’re a seasoned runner, or just embarking on your Couch to 5k journey, here’s a list of my favourite running events in the West Midlands. Sign up for added motivation, a new challenge and a great race day atmosphere. read more

  • Golden Valley Caravan and Campsite, Derbyshire

For me, bank holidays are made for camping. An extra night means all the effort of pitching the tent can be enjoyed that little bit longer, justifying it all the more (in case you needed any more of an excuse to get under canvas). This year, after venturing to Hogsdown Farm for the last couple of years, it was time to try somewhere new and so after a quick Google to see which campsites within about an hour’s radius had decent playgrounds, we settled on Golden Valley Caravan and Campsite in Derbyshire.

I’m not over exaggerating when I say it was the playgrounds that sold it to me – I knew I wanted somewhere that Pickle would just love and with so many picnic benches situated nearby, the optimist in me was excited about the prospect of maybe sitting down and savouring a cup of tea or a gin and tonic in the sunshine whilst he enjoyed the slides. read more

When we told Pickle we were going for a day out to a Castle – he had no idea what to expect. In his head, we were going to a bouncy castle. Imagine seeing his face when he was actually confronted with the mightily impressive Warwick Castle, and it’s gorgeous grounds. read more

  • Gorgeous sunrise over Mount Snowdon

    Sunrise Snowdon Summit from Llanberis

On 13th July 2019, together with my Mom, my hockey friend Pat and about fifty strangers, I boarded a coach around the back of Selfridges in Birmingham at 9pm to make our way to Llanberis in Wales. At about 12.40am, we arrived and set off to do a Sunrise Summit of Mount Snowdon. I was not prepared for just how magical it would be.

    The Llanberis Path Route

The Llanberis Path is the longest but gentlest way to climb Snowdon- making it the safest choice for ascent in the dark. There and back is about a 9 mile walk, covering an ascent of about 3,200 ft or 975 metres. Whilst there are a couple of sections that are a little steep and require a determined effort, describing it as a strenuous walk is probably about right. I’d say it’s very doable for a wide range of ages and experiences. read more

  • Happy Holly surrounded by mist in the Yorkshire Dales wearing Regatta Outdoors

Outdoors by Kilnsey Crag with Blacks and The North Face

It’s now less than a month until my Mom and I are doing our charity Snowdon walk, starting at midnight and hitting the summit in time for sunrise (hopefully). I’ve obviously been doing more walking in preparation, and so when Blacks invited us to join them for a day with The North Face by Kilnsey Crag, in the Yorkshire Dales, it was the perfect excuse to fit another walk in (and, as it turned out, become totally inspired for future adventures).

    Kilnsey Crag

Getting to Kilnsey involved a two and a half hour drive up to Manchester, before boarding a coach there to take us the remainder of the way – a further hour and a half. As the coach got closer to the Yorkshire Dales, the sound of the rain battering on the windscreen was a little daunting. Thankfully, although it wasn’t clear skies when we arrived, the downpour had reduced to a bit of heavy drizzle, and we were just excited to see what awaited us. read more

  • Pickle holding his baby chick

Spring Spectacular at Hatton Country World

This is a review of the Spring Spectacular event at Hatton Country World, which ran from 13 – 28 April 2019, our visit was organised through Coventry Bloggers.

Last week, I booked Tuesday off work more out of necessity than anything else (my Dad usually looks after Pickle on a Tuesday but they were instead having a wonderful time on a canal boat holiday!), and decided it was the perfect day for a bit of farm based fun. We’re no strangers to Hatton Country World, although our visits are usually during school term weekdays to make the most of the quieter times and often reduced entrance fees, so I know we’d be almost guaranteed to have a lovely time. read more
